Soon, AOL’s AIM Won’t Require A Separate Login To Chat With Contacts In Gmail

Since 2007, you’ve been able to sign in to your AOL Instant Messenger (AIM) account to chat with your AIM contacts directly from Gmail. You simply login with your AIM account in Gmail and your contacts will populate your gChat list, allowing you to chat with them just like you would your Google Talk contatcs.

From this notice, it looks like changes may be afoot to this feature. From AIM’s notice, In the next few days, Google and AOL are working together to change the way you connect to AIM buddies within Gmail. After this change, Gmail and AIM users can talk directly to each other without having to log into both services (you will no longer be able to log into AIM within Gmail’s “Chat” section).

It’s unclear what technology Google and AOL are working on that will allow users to integrate both services with Gmail; but AOL says it is working on an importer to add AIM contacts to your Gmail contacts list. AOL says in the notice: You’ll be able to IM them directly from your Gmail username, but your AIM Username will not show your online status.

AOL says the change will take place in the next few days, but you can sign up to receive a notice when new importer is available.

But honestly, who uses AIM anymore?

iPad 2 Gets A Big Launch In Beijing

MIC Gadgets has taken some great pictures of the iPad 2 launch at the Beijing Apple store. My favorite part? The official scalping area, where people who bought up all the stock can sit and wait for disappointed buyers to come out and buy for a markup.

I have to say, though, for a city as big and dense as Beijing, I kind of expected even more people than this. Regardless, Apple’s hot little tablet sold out in a few hours. Maybe because they let scalpers buy like 20 each?!

We know that a lot of people who buy the
iPad 2 are also going to buy Apple's new innovative folding cover.
But then again plenty of folks prefer to shop for non-Apple
alternatives, and we've got more than 30 iPad 2 covers and stands to
show you. Some are adaptations of previous models made for the original
iPad and some are fresh designs.

Of course, this roundup only represents a fraction of the cases
and stands available for the iPad 2, and many sleeves that were
available for the original iPad will also work just fine with the iPad
2. Some of the following cases are available now and some will be
arriving later this month and in May. As we get these in-house, we'll
offer more substantial write-ups of each product and put together a
list of top iPad 2 covers as we did for the original iPad.

Fly Or Die: The BlackBerry Playbook Vs. The Color Nook

Tablets and electronic book readers are on a collision course. In this episode of Fly or Die , ChrunchGear editor John Biggs and I discuss the pros and cons of the new BlackBerry Playbook and the Color Nook from Barnes & Noble. The PlayBook is fast and a solid effort from our much-beleaguered Canadian friends. But is it too little, too late?

If you are a BackBerry user and want a tablet that syncs to your phone, this could be for you. (In the video, Biggs keeps saying Android, but he means BlackBerry—too many Four Lokos before the taping). I actually like the PlayBook better than most Android tablets. But if it’s incredible apps that you want, the PlayBook’s choices are still pretty limited.

The Color Nook is a different story. It’s primary purpose is as a digital book reader and it’s main competition is the Kindle. But it is also a fully functioning color Android tablet. And just recently it added support for Android apps. So you can read books—including animated ones for your kids—browse the Web, and check out apps like Pulse and Pandora. Not bad for $250.
