Chat with your Gmail contacts on the iPhone

Last week, we launched a new version of Google Talk designed specifically for the iPhone. It works right in your Safari browser, so there's no need to download or install anything -- just go to talk.google.com and sign in.*

Because this version of Talk is designed to run in your browser, you'll be automatically signed out of Talk when you navigate to a different browser window or iPhone app. So while it's not a traditional "always-on" instant message client, it's useful for changing your status message on the go or checking in to see if someone's online and sending them a quick chat. It's equally nice for killing time at the airport.

*Google Apps users: visit http://talkgadget.google.com/a/your-domain.com/talkgadget/m from your iPhone's browser, but be sure to replace 'your-domain.com' with your actual domain name.

Great Review Site For iPhone Apps

I came across AppVee this evening, a new site that is creating written and video reviews of iPhone apps. We continue to write about iPhone applications that we find interesting and include them in Crunchbase, but we aren’t doing the kind of in-depth, categorized reviews that AppVee is taking the time to create.

AppVee rates each application based on a variety of factors depending on the type of app. For entertainment applications, for example, apps are rated on ease of use, features, frequency of use, interface and usefulness. User ratings are also collected and placed alongside the official AppVee review.

The most useful part of the site are the overview videos, which allow you to get an idea of what the app is before you download it. If you’re an iPhone fanatic, bookmark the site, you’ll use it.

See AppStoreApps as well.

Free content from NBC on the iPhone

NBC is giving away free episodes of hit shows on the iPhone (and Touch). All you have to do is go to NBC.com on an iPhone and you will get the invite to watch full episodes.

This doesn’t make sense to me. Yesterday, we find out that they will sell their shows on the Zune for the same price as Apple.  Then, they turn around and give it away for free to iPhone users. If NBC was trying to stick it to Apple this seems counterproductive. But wait…there’s more.

People are saying that the quality of the video is almost unwatchable.

Apparently the iPhone froze twice while trying to watch one episode. Is NBC trying to use the Trojan horse method to slap Apple again? Sabotaging the platform would be a great way to do that.

People may think that it’s the iPhone’s fault for the poor quality, but it’s really that NBC used the crappy 3gp codec. Since this is an iPhone-only feature on their site; you would think they would use a native iPhone codec.

I guess we will have to wait and see what happens next. I wonder if this will make Steve rethink his decision to not embrace the Mobile Flash player.

iPhone 1.1.3 firmware downgrade complete, still unbricks you, SDK docs leaked

iphoneheaders.jpgJust a quick note to all those with bricked iPhones — you can upgrade to 1.1.3, unbrick it, and then downgrade to 1.1.2. This is all pie-in-the-sky stuff right now but it seems to be working for some folks in Vietnam of all places and it’s a hardware hack, so if you’re squeamish around a screwdriver it’s probably not for you. Fear not, though, a software hack will come along soon enough and then we’ll all be happy.

Lightbulb Unlock iPhone 1.1.3 bootloader 4.6 ok !

Hello all !

I can finally confirm about iPhone 1.1.3 unlocked ok at 8:30PM 15/01/2008 by our team and many help from GeoHot from US, Imth from VN, and some experts about iPhone from Hackint0sh forum ! Great thanks to those awesome guys.

This method is hardware method. So have to open phone.

Status now is:

- Unlock the iPhone with firmware 1.1.3 (baseband 4.03.13)

- Downgrade the phone to 1.1.2 then jailbreak it for normally using.

- Phone will work at: firmware 1.1.2 and baseband 4.03.13.

We are still researching on Unlock and keep the firmware 1.1.3 (mean jailbreak 1.1.3) …

Will upload here some proof clip.

Thanks.

In other news, the 1.1.3 SDK notes have been leaked so if you want to port Custers Revenge to the iPhone, you can get started right now.

Google updates iPhone interface

iphone Jeez, get a room you two. Google’s all like, “Oh Apple iPhone, you’re so pretty. Sit at my table won’t you? I’ve upgraded myself to run much faster and sexier on your Safari browser. Look how fast Gmail loads now.”

Then Apple’s all, “Hey Google, sorry I haven’t called in a while. Thanks for the upgrade, you’re looking real good. Have you been working out? I’m gonna bump you up a couple notches in my speed dial. Maybe you could make me some dinner tomorrow night after the keynote. Then I’ll go hit some parties and you can wait up for me.”

Seriously though, it’s a good overhaul. Wise move too, in light of the recent traffic-splosion Devin told us about earlier today. I find myself using my iPod Touch more and more for Google-related activities, wishing it had some sort of phone function built into it so I could take it with me as I skip gleefully about the streets of Boston. Oh well.

iGoogle for iPhone

Google created a version of iGoogle optimized for iPhone, that displays all the gadgets and feeds from tab in a single column. To switch to another tab, choose a name from the drop-down displayed at the bottom of the page.

The iPhone interface has a public URL: http://google.com/ig/i, but iPhone users will be automatically redirected to this URL.

The standard mobile version of iGoogle available at http://google.com/m is much more limited: it only displays feeds and a very small number of gadgets, you need to manually add items to your page and you can't change the number of items displayed from a feed. Another limitation is that it only works in the US.
