Freeware: pyRybka - Virtual aquarium for your phone

My friend Damian is extremely productive lately, lot of the very cool accelerometer based applications. Applications like pyMoneta, pyPiwo, pyPoziomica, and it is really hard to say which one I like the most.

Incredible level of activity and effectiveness, and if he continues with releasing one application per week he will need a new keyboard soon for sure.

Anyway, pyRybka (I just like these cool Polish names) is the latest one and for those that aren't familiar with Poland language maybe is better to call it pyAquarium or pyFish to be precise. Same as all of Damian's other applications, pyRybka is developed in Python and require's the latest version for it to funct... .. .

Editors for Creating iGoogle Themes

igThemer is a simple way to create iGoogle themes. This week, Google released an API for creating themes, but if you don't want to read the documentation and create the theme files, igThemer lets you select the colors and the necessary images, while previewing the theme on the same page.

igThemer doesn't let you create themes with multiple scenes, but it hosts your theme so you can share it with your friends or submit it to iGoogle's directory. Regardless of the way you create a theme, an easy way to preview it is to use this URL:

http://www.google.com/ig?skin=SKIN_URL
(replace SKIN_URL with the location of your theme's XML file)

An even cooler solution lets you edit the theme directly in iGoogle and see the changes in real-time. Just go to iGoogle, copy the code below and paste it in the address bar (you could also bookmark the script):

javascript:var s=document.createElement('script');s.id="igteid"; s.type="text/javascript";s.src= "http://igoogle-theme-editor.googlecode.com/svn/" +"trunk/iGoogleThemeEditor/dist/ige.js?lang=en&" +new Date().getTime(); document.body.appendChild(s);void(0);

Blogger Becomes an OpenID Provider

After allowing you to authenticate your comments using an OpenID, Blogger is now an OpenID provider. To use any of your blogs as an OpenID identity, you need to check "Enable OpenID for blogs" in your Blogger profile (the feature is still experimental, so it's not added in the public release yet) and save the settings.

Blogger inserts this line in the head section of your template:

<link rel="openid.server" href="http://draft.blogger.com/openid-server.g" />

so now you can use any of your blogs as an OpenID. Some simple things you can do with your OpenID are to claim your blog at Technorati (you still need a Technorati account), sign in using your OpenID at Plaxo, Zoomr or post comments in a LiveJournal blog, like Brad Fitzpatrick's blog. A small inconvenience is that Blogger uses the subdomain of your blog instead of your name.

Yesterday, Yahoo announced it will support OpenID 2.0 (Blogger is a provider for OpenID 1.1), so the future is bright for this authentication system.

iPhone 1.1.3 firmware downgrade complete, still unbricks you, SDK docs leaked

iphoneheaders.jpgJust a quick note to all those with bricked iPhones — you can upgrade to 1.1.3, unbrick it, and then downgrade to 1.1.2. This is all pie-in-the-sky stuff right now but it seems to be working for some folks in Vietnam of all places and it’s a hardware hack, so if you’re squeamish around a screwdriver it’s probably not for you. Fear not, though, a software hack will come along soon enough and then we’ll all be happy.

Lightbulb Unlock iPhone 1.1.3 bootloader 4.6 ok !

Hello all !

I can finally confirm about iPhone 1.1.3 unlocked ok at 8:30PM 15/01/2008 by our team and many help from GeoHot from US, Imth from VN, and some experts about iPhone from Hackint0sh forum ! Great thanks to those awesome guys.

This method is hardware method. So have to open phone.

Liverpool are not for sale, insists Hicks

Liverpool co-owners George Gillett and Tom Hicks insist they remain 'fully committed to the club' despite Dubai International Capital reportedly preparing another bid to acquire a share of the Anfield team.

A year ago this month DIC were stunned by the last-minute failure of their bid to take control of the club but it is believed they are now set to try to buy the American's 50% stake in Anfield. DIC yesterday made no attempt to play down speculation when a spokesman said: 'We do not comment on such things, we have nothing to say on this.' However, a spokesman for Hicks was less equivocal. He said: 'Mr Hicks and Mr Gillett remain fully committed to the club. 'Any suggestion that Messrs Hicks and Gillett are contemplating a sale of the club or any portion thereof to DIC or anyone else is categorically untrue.' Liverpool will step out on Monday for their Barclays Premier League home game with Aston Villa with their minds focused just as much on beating non-league Havant and Waterlooville five days later. By the time the troubled Reds walk out at Anfield, they expect to be even further adrift of the top three.

Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea all play tomorrow away to teams in the bottom half of the table - Reading, Fulham and Birmingham respectively. So no-one would be surprised if the gap between Liverpool and the top spot is a massive 15 points by then, with the Gunners and Chelsea also pulling further away from the Anfield men. And that would even further reduce the chances of the Merseysiders making even a dramatic last-ditch bid to stay in the hunt. But less than a week later, Liverpool are at home to the little Hampshire club in the FA Cup fourth round, a game they surely will win to keep themselves at least with the hope of one domestic honour this term. The future ownership of the club will still hang like a dark cloud over Anfield, and boss Rafael Benitez knows that he must keep his side in with a chance of winning something. But even the ever-optimistic Jamie Carragher, who made his 500th appearance for the club in the midweek cup win over Luton, knows time is up on the title bid. He said: 'We are not stupid. You never throw the towel in, but for us to get back into contention for the title we would have to have an unbelievable second half to the season. 'And the rest would have to have an unbelievably bad second half to the campaign. We realise our best chance of silverware is the cup competitions. That is why they are so important.' Liverpool need to beat Villa to maintain their hopes of a fourth-place finish and a Champions League spot, now clearly the minimum requirement for Benitez. And Carragher insists that the players must not allow themselves to be affected by what is happening off the field at Liverpool. He said: 'You have to be strong mentally to play for Liverpool. Things happen off the pitch but you do not let it affect you.'

Office 2008 for OS X: Word 2008 review

template

So here we are faced with another version of Microsoft’s behemoth and I’m not terribly excited. I’ve been using Microsoft products since Works, back in the day, and I’ve got to say that with the slow and steady rise of web-based editors and programs with better workflow and features — some aimed at long form writers rather than “office workers” — have slowly replaced my Microsoft Office mindshare. Heck, even newcomer Pixelmator turned me off of that old standard, Photoshop, so maybe I was just ready for some change.

Given my current “Meh” attitude in regards to Office, I wanted to give Word 2008 a quick look and asses its various merits over 2004 and, as I did with Pages, decide if I should switch — or, rather, stay.

print shopchartsautotable

Word 2008 borrows liberally from Word 2007 for Windows yet interestingly avoids the “ribbon” UI, maintaining the top menu bar rather than a set of tabs along the top. More importantly, the Office icon doesn’t hang out in the top left corner, either, reducing visual clutter. The task bar is about the same but the icons are much larger and easier to hit.

word2007

But wait — bigger icons? That’s it? Well, Word has a number of templating features that were once relegated to the “new file” interface in Word 2004. For example, you can dump in canned title pages and charts just by hitting one of the pre-made templates under the tool bar. And for another example, you can create a quick table or chart, complete with shading, in seconds. Great for making reports, not so good if you’re writing blog posts or a short story based on your experience in Prague last summer where you totally got drunk every night and were way into gypsies.

So Word 2008 is a nice improvement, especially for office users. It is aimed squarely at the work environment and just barely infringes on the things iWork has been doing for years, namely making it easy to create interesting content with templates. However, as I’ve described, the tools in Word 2008 will soon grace a TPS report near you. It probably won’t grace your next novel.

Because this is not a corporate IT blog, I’m hard pressed to get into the Automator improvements or the Entourage interaction. I will review Entourage in good time, but I would say 90% of us are going to use Word to write the occasional resume or longer office document. The new version seems snappier than the old version, which isn’t much help, but other than standard UI changes I can’t really see many major differences. Unfortunately, OS X already comes with a number of useful applications for handling contacts and email and when, really, is the last time you needed to do a Mail Merge? Whereas I was pleased by the improvements in Word 2007 for Vista, I’m nonplussed by this version.

Incidentally, I’ve been using Scriviner for longer writing and TextEdit for blog posts. I use Word for one simple reason — the “Send To…” feature. I know it’s silly, but I love being able to write a piece for the Times or whatever and click send to. Pages doesn’t have that. Call me a freak if you’d like, but that’s really the only reason.

So, in conclusion, upgrade if you’re in an office — after all, it is called Office 2008. If you’re at home, use Google Docs, OpenOffice, Pages or anything else — Word 2008 is officially overkill.

I will attempt to review each application on its own in series. Next: Excel 2008! You know, for spreadsheets.

Product Placement for Breakfast?

When Georgia was younger we drove by Burgerville, our locally owned, wind-powered, canola-oil-to-biodiesel-recycling, affordable-employee-healthcare-offering, Mary’s-Softdough-kid-meal-goodie-giving fast food joint. We had been to a different Burgerville once or twice, but we were surprised when Georgia said as we passed by, “Can we go to Burgerville?” She recognized the BV logo even though she didn’t know letters — and even though we had been there very few times and this wasn't the location we had gone to.

We know — kids recognize brands before they can read. Advertisers know this too, and spend much money and effort trying to make sure our kids recognize, and pester for, their particular brand of fast food badness. Georgia knows about fast food. She chants the mantra that fast food isn’t good for you, and knows that Burgerville is someplace we go on rare occasions. We’ve told her a little bit about why we don’t eat much fast food, and why we choose Burgerville over others, but we haven’t talked about what the others are.

Jump to now. We read the daily comic section every morning here at Chez Momster. Some of Georgia’s favorites are Mutts, Baby Blues and, inexplicably (and with much parental editing) Pearls Before Swine. Some days others catch her eye, and last week it was Mother Goose and Grimm. The week of 1/7 – 1/12/08 was an odd story line; the characters ate too much corporate branded cereal and turned into the different corporate logos. It flew right over Georgia’s head. She didn’t know who Cap’n Crunch, Tony the Tiger and the Quaker Oat guy were, but we wondered if there was any way she could not know Ronald McDonald, appearing in the final strip of the week after Mother Goose had eaten too much of the fast food.

Hova: What did Mother Goose turn into?

Georgia: A clown!

Hova: Did she eat too much clown?

Georgia: Mayyybe so?

Georgia used to eat a lot of turkey jerky, and for some reason she called it “clown.” We never figured out why, and made clear that no clowns had been harmed in the making of the turkey jerky. It was funny when we'd go to the store and she would yell, “I WANT CLOWN!” pointing at the jerky. So this particular comic was confusing to her: Was Mother Goose eating a real clown? Why did she turn into a clown and not a turkey?

We always play dumb when it comes to these moments, if it’s something we don’t want to explain we just say, “I don’t get it, do you?”

In any case, it was exciting to us that she didn’t know Ronald McDonald—McDonald’s just isn’t in our vocabulary, or her worldview.

Farther along in the funnies that same day, Grand Avenue featured the McDonald's corporate logo amid classic American symbols.

Hova tested: There’s the American Flag, an eagle and Uncle Sam. What’s that, is it the St. Louis arch?

Belinda: Is it an inchworm?

Georgia: I think it’s just an M.

Was it some sort of product placement scheme, or just weird comic artist zeitgeist? We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more corporate logos in the comic pages, and be ever vigilant for teachable moments about advertising where we didn’t have much worry before. And sorry Mickey D’s, Georgia isn’t hooked. Yet.

Football: Gerrard hat-trick puts a smile back on Benitez's face

Liverpool's Steven Gerrard celebrates after scoring his third goal against Luton.

LIVERPOOL, England : Steven Gerrard brought a rare smile to the face of his beleaguered Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez with a hat-trick in Tuesday's 5-0 FA Cup third round replay win over Luton.

Gerrard, who now has 15 goals this season, scored three times in the space of 20 second half minutes at Anfield as the seven-times FA Cup winners eased into the fourth round.

Cash-strapped Luton, who are two divisions below Liverpool, had held the Merseyside club to a surprise 1-1 draw nine days earlier yet there was never any doubt about the outcome of this replay once Ryan Babel had opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time.

Finland defender Sami Hyypia also found the net to ease the pressure on Benitez whose long-term future at the club appears increasingly uncertain.

There was an overwhelming outpour of support for Benitez before and during the game following revelations that Liverpool's American co-owners had spoken to Jurgen Klinsmann about becoming the club's new manager.

The talks took place in November when Benitez's relationship with George Gillett and Tom Hicks was strained. Klinnsman has since agreed to manage Bayern Munich, but Benitez's treatment at the hands of the Americans has not been well received by the fans.

One banner which was held aloft in The Kop before kick-off read 'thanks Yanks More Friendly Fire' while fans chanted Benitez's name throughout the tie.

Yet supporters might just as well have jeered their players off the pitch after a forgettable first 45 minutes which was punctured by Babel's seventh goal of the season with virtually the last kick of the half.

Despite wheeling out leading scorer Fernando Torres and Gerrard, both of whom were rested in the draw at Luton, Liverpool found chances hard to come by against opponents 62 places below them in the League ladder.

Babel was unfortunate not to open the scoring in the ninth minute when his curling effort struck a post and rebounded to safety after Gerrard had surged through Luton's non-existent defence.

Luton manager Kevin Blackwell has just as many problems as Benitez. His team are facing relegation to the fourth tier of English football after having 10 points deducted for going into administration.

Blackwell has announced his intentions to quit the club in February after being forced to sell a number of his best players to raise funds for the cash-strapped club.

Yet he could be proud of his side's dogged first half defensive display before the floodgates opened in the second half.

Despite the scoreline, it had looked like being a frustrating night for the hosts until Babel broke the deadlock after rounding off a fine move involving Torres and Gerrard.

Liverpool never looked back from that moment as Gerrard turned on the style to sweep his team into the next round.

Renowned for scoring spectacular goals from distance, he used his head to make it 2-0 in the 52nd minute before Hyypia killed off Luton five minutes later with his third goal of the campaign.

Gerrard's second goal of the tie arrived in the 64th minute after Torres's effort had rebounded off a defender into his path while his third, and Liverpool's fifth, was a stunning 30-yard drive which left Luton keeper Dean Brill rooted to the spot. - AFP/de

Football: Liverpool, Tottenham advance at FA Cup

Liverpool's players celebrate

LONDON: Rafa Benitez finally got some good news as Steven Gerrard's hat-trick helped Liverpool cruise into the FA Cup fourth round with a 5-0 win against crisis ridden League One outfit Luton on Tuesday.

Benitez's position looks increasingly untenable after Liverpool's American owners admitted they held talks with Jurgen Klinsmann over the manager's job late last year.

But the Spaniard at least avoided an embarrassing third round replay defeat thanks to Gerrard's treble and goals from Ryan Babel and Sami Hyypia at Anfield.

Liverpool's stars ran riot in the second half and advanced to a tie against Conference South club Havant and Waterlooville or League One Swansea in the next round.

Luton had out-played and out-fought Liverpool for long periods when they drew 1-1 at Kenilworth Road. Benitez's side, captained by Jamie Carragher on his 500th appearance, didn't take them for granted this time.

The breakthrough arrived in first half stoppage time when Fernando Torres fed Babel and the Dutch winger's low shot arrowed home.

Gerrard scored from close range in the 52nd minute before Hyypia glanced in a header five minutes later.

A 64th minute strike from Gerrard made it four and the England midfielder completed his first hat-trick for over two years in the 72nd minute.

Benitez refused to be drawn on his future, saying: "I wasn't thinking much about it. We were really thinking about this game because we knew it was important to progress in the FA Cup.

"I'm really pleased because we won 5-0 and played a good game," added the implacable Spaniard.

Robbie Keane's 99th goal for Tottenham gave his side a 1-0 win at Reading.

Keane struck in the first half at the Madejski Stadium to earn Juande Ramos's men a trip to Manchester United.

Dimitar Berbatov was sidelined with flu as Ramos made five changes but Keane made sure the Bulgaria striker wasn't missed.

Spurs had the better of it from the moment Keane pounced from close range in the 15th minute. Younes Kaboul had driven Jermaine Jenas's corner against the crossbar and Keane was perfectly placed to slot home.

Managerless Bury stunned Norwich as the League Two side beat their Championship opponents 2-1 at Gigg Lane.

Bury sacked Chris Casper and director of football Keith Alexander on Monday and the decision appeared to work wonders.

They went ahead in the 18th minute at Gigg Lane through Ben Futcher. Andy Bishop increased Bury's lead in the 61st minute and, although veteran Dion Dublin gave Norwich hope in the 86th minute, the hosts held on to earn a trip to Southampton.

Championship leaders West Bromwich held their nerve in a penalty shoot-out against Charlton to set up a fourth round clash at Peterborough.

Tony Mowbray's team blew a two-goal lead as they were held 2-2 after extra-time at the Hawthorns, but Charlton missed two of their five spot-kicks in the shoot out and Albion won 4-3.

The hosts took the lead in the 14th minute when Roman Bednar met Zoltan Gera's header with a tap-in. Albion looked certain to go through when James Morrison added the second goal in the 51st minute.

But Darren Ambrose reduced the deficit in the 64th minute and Chris Dickson sent the tie to extra-time with a 90th minute equaliser.

Millwall, 2004 FA Cup finalists, will travel to Coventry after beating League One rivals Walsall 2-1 at the New Den.

Kenny Jackett's side went ahead in the 15th minute when Ben May drove home from the edge of the area. Gary Alexander put Millwall in control when he scored four minutes into the second half.

Alex Nicholls pulled one back for the visitors in the 61st minute but it failed to stop Walsall suffering their first defeat in 19 matches.

Sheffield Wednesday's clash against Premiership tailenders Derby was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch at Hillsborough. Derby's fellow Premiership strugglers Fulham's trip to Bristol Rovers and Barnet's tie against Swindon suffered the same fate. - AFP/ac

Breaking: Mozilla Hires Humanized Founders

mozilla-logo.pngWe hear that the Mozilla Foundation is buying hiring three of the principle folks from Humanized, a small software user-interface shop in Chicago founded by Aza Raskin, the son of famous Apple interface designer Jef Raskin. Humanized has been working on improving the UI of both desktop and Web-based software, with projects like Enso and music search engine Songza. While we don’t know the amount that Mozilla is paying for Humanized, we understand the acquisition is more of a talent buy.

Songza, which is a Crunchies nominee in the best design category, was spun off as a separate company in December and is not part of the deal. Neither executives from Humanized nor Songza would comment on the deal.

Expect to see the Humanized team, which is about a half-dozen folks, not all of whom will be going to Mozilla, put their UI chops to work on Firefox or other yet-to-be-announced software projects. Perhaps new desktop apps that work both online and offline and are separate from the browser? Whatever it is, we can’t wait to see what they come up with.

Update: Mozilla CEO John Lilly confirms his interest in Humanized, but says it is being done as a straight employment agreement, not an acquisition. In a note to me, he says:

Mozilla has hired 3 of the principals from Humanized. They will be joining the Mozilla Labs team on January 16, 2008. We expect a lot of innovation work from them, some Firefox-related, some broader, just like everything else in Mozilla Labs. This was not an acquisition. No premium was paid and no intellectual property was acquired by Mozilla.

The work done by the Humanized principals speaks for itself — there are lots of great, web-relevant ideas in their work and we’re excited to have them join Mozilla.

The four main people at Humanized are Raskin, John DiCarlo, Atul Varma, and Andrew Wilson. Raskin will be joining with two of the others.

Update 2: Aza Raskin speaks. He now tells me:

I am not at liberty to say which founders will be coming with me to Mozilla. However, I will say that the person who is not coming has decided to follow their dream of pursuing ground-to-orbit transfer vehicles and jet-propulsion research. Although I am deeply sad to no longer be working with him directly, if anybody can make space travel a reality, it’s him. He’s one of the top 3 smartest people I know.

The goal of Enso, Humanized’s flagship product, is to make computers more usable for everyone. You shouldn’t need to care about which application or web service has the functionality you want — you should just be able to use that functionality anywhere. You should be able to spellcheck your file names, add maps to your emails, and translate your IMs by simply telling your computer what you want.

There is clearly a lot in common with that goal and Mozilla’s goals. Although I don’t know what the final form will be, there is a huge opportunity to make both the web and the desktop fundamentally more humane.
