Jendela Batik adds a retro vibe to colourful prints for designs that suit any occasion.
IF YOU had to name one thing that distinguishes Jendela Batik from other batik-makers, it has to be its fabrics as they’re nothing like conventional batik. Its creations certainly don’t run along the same lines as other typical fare associated with batik.
There were no loud, contrasting colours during the presentation of Jendela’s spring/summer 2008 collection. Instead, the show played up earthy tones in designs that were chic and suitable for any occasion. Jendela managed to pull this off successfully by having vibrant shades of blue and purple used intermittently to add to the retro vibe of the collection.
This season, Jendela looks to the 60s and 70s for inspiration, paying tribute to the female icons of that era.
For its haute couture collection, the influence of former American first lady Jackie Onassis was evident. Using motifs and colours for its Asli range, Jendela created a range of evening wear that was all about elegance and sophistication.
Shades of gold were dominant for the evening collection in the form of raw silks, chiffon, satin and organza. For the gowns, the silhouettes were form fitting but shawls, sashes and trains were used to add flair and a fanciful touch to an otherwise predictable fashion.
For day wear, the theme was power outfits designed for women of style and substance. For its contemporary range, Jendela offered fashion infused with eco urban motifs paired with batik accents. Using raw and satin silk, the outfits played up sleek silhouettes and brought images of the genteel woman to mind, someone immaculate in her appearance, reminiscent of the late Jackie O.
If the evening and day wear are seen to be continuing with Jendela’s tradition of creating for the sophisticated woman, the casual wear moved away from previous collections and leaned towards the 70s.
Think of all that personifies “groovy”. Funky and fun, the outfits bore a certain likeness to those worn by icons of the 70s, namely Charlie’s Angels. There were jumpsuits, culottes and trendy caftans in bold colourful prints definitely out to make a statement. Versatile and modern, they can be paired with a pair of jeans or hot pants for a casual day out or while vacationing at a resort.
Made from translucent voile, the outfits were inspired by the designer collaboration of Ossie Clark and his wife Celia Britwell. Jendela created prints evocative of that genre for their casual collection.
Clark, who dressed London’s famous and fashionable during the mid-60s to mid-70s, was noted for designing during a period associated with breaking the rules while focusing on individual elements which were translated into his designs. His silhouettes were combined with textiles designed by Britwell. Her prints were often inspired by nature.
